Azarenka moves past Kerber to reach Berlin quarterfinal

Belarus' world number 16 Victoria Azarenka has progressed to the Grass Court Championships Berlin 2021 quarterfinal after seeing off Germany's world number 27 Angelique Kerber, 6-3, 7-5, BelTA has learned.

In today's round of Last 16 Victoria Azarenka had to come from 1-4 down in the second set to progress to 6-3, 7-5. The match lasted for an hour and 22 minutes. The former world number one will next face either world number 10 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic or world number 26 Jessica Pegula of the United States.

Victoria Azarenka triumphed over Germany's world number 129 Andrea Petkovic, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), in the opener.

Belarus' world number 4 Aryna Sabalenka lost to world number 28 Madison Keys of the United States, 4-6, 6-1, 5-7 at the start of the Grass Court Championships Berlin 2021.

Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka went off to a good start in the doubles event, taking a solid win over the Czech duo of Karolina Muchova and Karolina Pliskova, 6-1, 6-3. In the quarterfinal the Belarusian duo will play Petra Martic of Croatia and Shelby Rogers of the United States.

The tournament in Berlin will be over on 20 June.
