Sport in Belarus

Belarus is by right called a sports nation. The state is committed to and shoulders the responsibility for the development of the sports sector. The state is engaged in drafting regulations associated with sport, development and funding of the sports sector, construction and maintenance of sports facilities, fitness centers, sports clubs, training of elite athletes, coaches and other specialists and ensuring their social security, R&D and information activities.

The country provides support to team sports. Clubs have received considerable administrative and financial support, and as a result, national senior and junior teams have become regular participants in the finals of top tournaments, European and world championships.

Successful performance at the most prestigious international competitions relies on many factors, most important of which, in our opinion, are scientific, medical and personnel support of this process.

No effort is spared to improve scientific support of Belarus’ national teams. In particular, Belarusian R&D institutes and the National Academy of Sciences have come up with an array of scientific developments which have been recommended for use. As regards medical support, the unified computerized monitoring system has been upgraded in the country. The National Sports Medicine Center has set up a mobile diagnostic laboratory as well as of an immunology and hormone laboratory.

For the first time in its independent history, Belarus won a Winter Olympics gold medal in 2010. Alexei Grishin took the champion’s title in the aerials at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.

The stunning performance of its athletes has secured Belarus a place among the top twenty sports nations (12th). This is the best result the country has ever had in its sports history.

Tourism is an important sector of the national economy of Belarus. Belarus has created all necessary conditions for the development of inbound tourism. Belarus is a state open to cooperation, including in tourism.
There is no greater value than health for a human and the society on the whole. People’s health, promotion of physical education and sports is the priority of Belarus’ social policy. Physical education, mass sports, and recreation are the universal means to strengthen health and cultivate a healthy way of life.
