Olga Mazurenok 2nd at European 10,000m Cup in MinskOlga Mazurenok of Belarus finished second at the European 10,000m Cup in Minsk, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian covered the distance in 32:13.73, finishing behind Sara Moreira of Portugal (32:03.57).
“It was difficult to compete with the Portuguese runner. She is the European leader. Sara Moreira was even unhappy with the time she showed in Minsk. The Belarusians were more focused on the team result, and did well,” Olga Mazurenok said.
Last year's champion Esma Aydemir of Turkey came in third, clocking the time of 32:41.03.
The Belarusian team topped the overall women's team standings.
Apart from Olga Mazurenok, two more Belarusian runners made it to the top ten.
Svetlana Kudelich finished 5th (32:48.62), while Anastasia Ivanova was 6th (32:54.98).
Nina Savina came in 12th (33:43.52), Lyudmila Lyakhovich – 19th, Tatiana Stefanenko – 31st.
The European 10,000 Cup was attended by European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen and IAAF Vice President, President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Sergey Bubka.
A total of 79 athletes from 18 countries took part in the competitions in Minsk.
The European 10,000 Cup has been regularly held since 1997.
The 20th edition of the tournament was won by Daniele Meucci of Italy (28:24.71) and Esma Aydemir of Turkey (33:33.38) in Mersin, Turkey in 2016.
The team overall standings were topped by Italy (men) and the UK (women).
